about

Originally released at the start of 2020 by a five-label co-operative team, Extradition Order’s American Prometheus is the second in their ongoing trilogy of albums on iconic American figures.

After their astute post-indie dissection of the Kennedy dynasty on their previous album in 2015, EO’s obsession with US politics, culture and history turned to the life and career of J Robert Oppenheimer around the Manhattan Project and the development of the first A-bomb.

(The third album in the trilogy appears later in 2023 - Poet Of The Appetites is a study on food writer M.F.K. Fisher).

“A Northern Soul album about the atomic bomb” was the tagline in 2020…that music is in the band’s blood and their Warrington roots….that’s the most we had to say about it then…..

Now (in 2023) with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie buzz in fill swing, Gare Du Nord are taking the opportunity to gesture pointedly towards this record again - effectively the unofficial official soundtrack companion of the movie, made before it was thought of.

Like the movie, the American Prometheus album was inspired by Bird and Sherwin’s 2005 book. The songs cover the science a little, but also Oppenheimer’s private and political life and legacy - the album concludes with the reminder that he was nominated for a Nobel Prize three times but never won it.

The album was - and is - dedicated to EO founder member Nick Boardman who sadly passed away in 2018 but whose bass hooks and singing run through this record at its foundations.

".....acutely cut from the same art pop template that graced those early Talking Heads and Modern Lovers platters.......a transfusion of the Sinatras and Fire Engines’ contortionist pop, some keenly fused moments of classic foot flapping Two Tone-ism and a smidgeon of the Dexy’s ‘searching for the young soul rebels’....... a neat hysteria fuelled hotpot of infectious groove."
